In its ninth year of bringing educational and entertaining Jewish-themed films to the city, the Nashville Jewish Film Festival kicks off Nov. 7-12.
The festival creates a forum in which the Nashville community can discuss issues surrounding Jewish life in today’s society, event organizers say. The films chosen to be showcased at the festival demonstrate the depth of Jewish culture, religion, history and the social climate of today. As an additional goodie, four extra screenings have been added to this year’s roster.
The event kicks off with the “Opening Night Cocktail Supper” featuring dinner at Cabana. Tickets are $75 for individuals and $135 for couples. The opening night festivities include the opening night film, Seven Minutes in Heaven scheduled to air at 7:15 p.m.
Each of the films throughout the six-day festival feature thought-provoking pieces in varied genres. Festival goers can view films of art, drama, romance, comedy and Jewish history. The stories from the films discuss social justice, moral courage, conflict, determination, triumph and failure. Thirteen films are set to captivate audiences of all ages. Several of the filmmakers will be available to discuss their work immediately after the screenings.
Each year the NJFF presents the Annual Kathryn H. Gutow Student Film Competition featuring student films with Jewish theme or content from campuses around the world. Student filmmakers will be eligible for a $1,000 cash prize and film competition finalists will be chosen to have their films screened at the festival. The winning film will also be screened at the Nashville Film Festival in April 2010.
Tickets are $9 each and matinee films shown before 6 p.m. are $7. Discounted tickets are available for $6 each for students, seniors 65 years old and older and groups of 10 or more. The All Festival Pass allows guests to view all films and attend special events and is $125 each. The $45 Reel Deal Pass is for those 25 years old and younger to attend all films. Tickets may be purchased online at www.nashvillejewishfilmfestival.org or at the Belcourt Theatre box office.
